- I follow a 40-30-30 weight loss plan and use the Balance brand bars regularly. Most of the flavors are very tasty and economical. The Outdoor bars by Balance are quite chewy so they satisfy my need to really "eat" rather than drinking a meal replacement shake, and they are formulated not to melt, so they are great to take along on outings. Here's the low-down on the taste: Outdoor bars: None of these are very sweet. Nut Berry is the favorite. It seems to have some seeds in it and also pieces of dried fruit. Second place goes to Crunchy Peanut. It has a great peanut flavor, similar to dry roasted peanuts, but the bar is chewy and a bit sticky. Chocolate Crisp is not very good. Since it is not sweet, the chocolate flavor is bland and almost earthy tasting. If you want to satisfy that chocolate craving, this is NOT the one to try. For the regular Balance bars, the Chocolate Raspberry Fudge wins hands down. It is chocolaty and fudgy inside with a chocolaty coating outside. Very satisfying for my moments of weakness. Like having dessert without breaking your diet! A very close second is the regular Chocolate flavor. Exactly the same as the Chocolate Raspberry Fudge, but without the raspberry. Next would have to be the Balance Gold Caramel Nut Blast. This is made to be like a candy bar. It has a caramel and nut layer over a "nougat" layer and is covered with a chocolaty coating. It is much like a candy bar, but not as sweet and sticky. I find the Chocolate and Chocolate Raspberry sweeter and therefore more "candy bar like" to me. Lastly the Almond Brownie and Honey Peanut. Neither of these bars are coated. The Almond Brownie paled by comparison to the Chocolate bar, but was much better than the Chocolate Crisp Outdoor bar. It had bits of real almonds in it and was chewy, but leaned toward the side of dry, and to me, was not sweet enough for chocolate flavored bar. The Honey Peanut was similar to the Crunchy Peanut Outdoor bar, but I preferred the Crunchy Peanut Outdoor bar.
Overall, I highly recommend the Balance Nutrition bars for anyone following the 40-30-30 or Zone diets.
